Respect at Work is 5
I don’t really know what I expected when I started Respect at Work. Sure, originally it was just a side gig, I was doing a favour for the manager of an aged care facility who wanted some training for her staff. To do the training I needed an ABN and a business name, that part was easy, I just thought about what I wanted to communicate, and ‘Respect at Work’ nailed it. Setting up the business finances, website and business model were less enjoyable, but thanks to some awesome support (I have the best tax agent in Tasmania - thanks Luci), we got there.
Since late October 2017 I have delivered roughly 550 training sessions, across 4 Australian states (plus some on-line training in Canada later this month), to approximately 6800 people. I am grateful to the organisations that have invested in their culture and trusted me with their staff, and I value the conversations I have had with so many training participants. My suite of content options has increased, as has my bank of resources and stories. I am extremely proud of this business and believe in it even more every day.
I talk to training participants about what they want from their workplace culture and how they want to feel, these questions apply to me too. I love the question ‘what makes you buzz?’, and I take seriously the privilege of being able to engage others in this question. Owning my own business has been a roller coaster, but the buzz for me has been; the conversations, my home office, managing my own schedule, and allowing money and time to invest in my own learning every year. I have added DISC facilitator, workplace mediator, and Psychological Safety facilitator to my qualifications and am deciding between a couple of options for what’s next - although perhaps this January should just be dedicated to reading all of the excellent culture books I have added to my library this year.
At 53 I guess I need to work for another 10 + years before retirement - hopefully in 10 years’ time I will be writing a blog titled ‘Respect at Work is 15’ - that would be an awesome buzz :)
